Laramie, July 4th

There’s nothing here but open spaceOn the outskirts of town

Nature, Antelope (lots of antelope)

Horses roaming free

— except at the fences

Wind and grass

as far as the eye can see

wipe away any memories of human history. Natural.

In what is now the edge of nature The suburbs starting.

Matthew Shepherd died on a fence. Not a marker.

Not a rainbow flag.

Wiped away memory of a human life

Not natural at all.

God remembers when we try to erase.
