It occurred to me this morning that if a child can’t be responsible with their phone, we take it away. If I don’t drive well, they take away my license. If you are an addict, we take away your right to control your own money until you can prove you’ve well enough to handle it yourself. It’s a simple solution.
With as many mass shootings as we have had this year, it’s obvious that gun owners can’t handle their assault weapons. Time’s up, thanks for playing. We, as Americans, have given the manufacturers plenty of time to stop making them. We have given the NRA plenty of time to prove how safe these things are. We have given owners enough chances to prove they are safe. At what point do they cross the line so that we say “enough is enough”? I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure that we’ve crossed it a long time ago.
So, here’s my proposal: A moratorium on the manufacture and sale of automatic weapons until gun owners can prove that they can handle them. I don’t care that it’s a “right” anymore. Kids have their right to their phones and phones don’t kill people. Cars don’t kill people, bad drivers kill people.
I don’t care if it’s “constitutional” any more. The fact of the matter is that these things aren’t necessary for a public militia. San Bernardino or not, I don’t fear an invasion from outside, I fear an invasion of murderers into the soul of our country. We already have proof that that exists.
Now, people will say, “But I didn’t shoot anybody”. Sometimes you punish a whole bunch of kids to show people you’re serious. I’m sick of proving that they shouldn’t have them. I want them to start proving they can.
In the same vein, maybe it’s time to take guns away from cops. They haven’t proven they can use them safely either lately. Honestly, when police fire guns, nothing good comes from it. So thieves get money. When innocents are being held by criminals, it’s just as likely that some of them will be killed. Maybe we should just limit removal of police guns to areas where there are a majority of Black folks. Police in those areas can’t seem to control their weapons. Maybe if they didn’t have guns, they’d think of some other way to halt crime that doesn’t lead to death.
It’s hard to make the case that untaxed cigarettes us really worth a person’s life or that a stolen cigar presents a real danger to society, but clearly, a gun in the situation does.
I know this is going to infuriate some people It infuriates addicts when you take away their drugs, too. That doesn’t mean it’s the wrong thing to do.
