A friend of mine e-mailed this to me last night. I don’t usually give idiots the time of day, but I felt like I had to defend Jesus one more time from IDIOTS who claim to know him.

As a contradiction to what you’ll see below, here are actual words from the Bible: (New International Version, ©2010)

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

And from Jesus (remember him, Mr. Phelps?)

Matthew: 5: 1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes

He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

And some more words of Jesus in red:

Matthew 5: 21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

(The term “Raca” here, may have been the equivalent to the word “faggot”, according to some scholars. Just thought you should know)

and still more words of that Jesus guy:

Matthew 5: 38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[h] 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

THAT is Christianity! Do you see any of that below? I don’t.

Peace, in the name of  Jesus..,

  1. Yes, John, I heard that the Westboro Baptist Church is going to picket the funeral of the little girl who was killed in Tucson. I posted on Facebook, “What part of love your neighbor don’t they understand?” You have certainly expanded on that. I don’t understand how they can be a church. I wonder whether any of them have actually read the gospels.

  2. Hey, John Dog. Ole Phred Phelps may say he’s a Baptist (which somehow suggests that he may be a Christian), but I think he’s neither. I think he’s an asshole, and a purely dangerous asshole at that. Now, mind you, I’ve met plenty of assholes in my life, and dangerous ones, too… some of them even taught at Cemetery. And, I’ve even been called an asshole, and have been told that I, too, was/am dangerous.

What separates ole’ Phred’s world view from mine is a world of hate, a world of paranoia, a world of self-righteousness, and a distinctly different read on the Bible, both testaments. When I see the despicable behavior of the Phelpsians, I can not help but remember that now-famous line from “Spaceballs” when Lord Helmet says in exasperation, “We’re surrounded by Assholes!”

    • I never thought of myself as a public “defender of the faith”, but this guy’s just a dangerous and evil idiot. Crazy doesn’t help, either. I don’t care how he got this way, though I probably should. He’s not even in the ballpark of Christianity. Thanks for responding, Rick and Val. Other Christians confirming my belief makes me not look odd. I love you both.

      • Add one more who agrees with you on this, John.

People who represent them as Christians, then do things like this, can do nothing good for Christianity. While I appreciate Christians who try to live up to God’s moral standards, they are also called upon to show love (as you have already described). If they want to protest against all sinners, they should probably be reminded of how many of us are without sin- “not one”. Christians are sinners too, and should open their arms to other sinners with the hopes of getting them into God’s Kingdom. I can’t see how a single person would ever be brought to Christ through their actions, and I have a hard time envisioning the Father saying “Well done, good and faithful servant” to people who make Him look like this.

      • Bob:

Finally, a response from you I can agree with! It’s hard to argue with the Bible when it’s as clear as that and it’s hard not to see non-Christian “Christians” when they’re as blatant as this. Blessings to you and the God we both serve! In Jesus’ name, Peace…
